James Watt (1821-1870) and his wife Barbara Machray Watt (1822-1902) were natives of Aberdeen, Scotland. In 1848, James immigrated to America; Barbara and sons James (b. 1844), William (b. 1846), and Peter (b. 1849) sailed on a later ship and arrived in New York in September of 1849. James W. Herron was a civil engineer at the Navy Yard in Pensacola. He died while working on a construction project for the Pensacola naval base on December 1, 1856 (Source: Pensacola Gazette, December 6, 1856). His son James S. Herron, Jr., was a noted Pensacola physician who served as a surgeon in the Confederate army and attended patients during an outbreak of yellow fever at Fort Barrancas.
